Crown thinning, crown raising, and canopy reduction are three distinct pruning techniques, each solving a different problem. Most trees only need one or two of these, not all three, and we’ll recommend based on what your tree actually needs, typically $250 to $1,000 depending on scope.
Crown Thinning
Selectively removes some interior branches to reduce density, improving light penetration and airflow through the canopy. This reduces wind resistance (lowering storm risk) and can improve the health of grass or plantings underneath that were struggling in heavy shade. Done correctly, thinning doesn’t change the tree’s overall shape or size, just its density.
Crown Raising
Removes lower branches to increase clearance underneath — for a driveway, walkway, roofline, or simply to open up a view or improve light to the yard below. This is a targeted, lower-canopy service and doesn’t affect the upper crown.
Canopy Reduction
Reduces the overall size of the canopy, typically to relieve stress on a structurally weak tree, bring an overgrown tree back within bounds of a property line or utility clearance, or reduce weight on limbs that are showing signs of strain. This is more involved than thinning or raising and should be done gradually rather than all at once to avoid stressing the tree.
Which One Does Your Tree Need?
We assess the tree’s actual problem first — too dense, blocking something below, or simply too large for its space — and recommend accordingly rather than defaulting to the most expensive option. Many trees just need thinning or a modest raise, not a full reduction.
